A new seated dance class designed to support people affected by cancer has launched in Sheffield, thanks to a combined funding boost from The Talbot Trust and Weston Park Cancer Charity.
The initiative, led by Dancing for Health CIC (DFH), marks an expansion of its services beyond Chesterfield and into a second area, increasing access to inclusive physical activity for those living with and beyond cancer.
A £3,000 grant from The Talbot Trust enabled the organisation to recruit and train a new instructor, cover initial setup costs, and deliver a targeted marketing campaign to launch the class at Graves Health and Sports Centre. The funding also supports the ongoing weekly delivery of the sessions.
An additional £1,500 from Weston Park Cancer Charity will fund a further 16 weeks of classes—an investment DFH says is critical to building long-term sustainability. DFH recognise that establishing new referral pathways and raising awareness among healthcare professionals takes time, while participant numbers typically grow gradually. The extended funding period will help ensure the sessions can become firmly embedded within the local community.
The seated dance classes offer a gentle, accessible form of exercise tailored to individuals recovering from cancer treatment. Designed to support both physical rehabilitation and emotional wellbeing, the sessions aim to improve mobility, boost confidence, and encourage ongoing participation in physical activity. Beyond the physical benefits, the classes are helping to foster a sense of community. Participants are encouraged to stay after sessions to socialise, creating opportunities for peer support and friendship among people facing similar experiences.
The programme has been developed with accessibility at its core. It is suitable for wheelchair users, those who prefer to remain seated, and individuals able to take part while standing. Attendees are also welcome to bring carers, family members, or friends for additional support.
With early signs of positive impact, organisers hope the Sheffield classes will continue to grow—offering a welcoming space where movement, connection, and recovery come together.
